How the Hair Drug Test Works

Our laboratory employs a highly reliable methodology known as Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) in conjunction with other mass spectrometry techniques to identify the presence of illegal drugs in hair samples. These techniques have received accreditation from multiple reputable agencies, ensuring their accuracy and validity.

Through this methodology, we can effectively measure drug molecules that are embedded within the hair shaft. One significant advantage of this approach is its ability to eliminate any potential contamination risks. Even when individuals have used shampoos, external chemicals, or encountered other contaminants, the results remain unalterable due to the robustness of the testing process.

Hair Drug Test vs. Urine or Blood Test

When comparing hair sample testing to traditional methods like blood or urine tests, it becomes evident that the former has a distinct advantage in detecting drug use over a much longer period.

Conventional urine testing, also known as urinalysis, is limited in its ability to detect most drugs for only 2-3 days. Beyond this timeframe, the test results become negative, rendering the screening ineffective. Consequently, individuals who engage in drug use and are required to undergo testing, such as for pre-employment purposes, may intentionally delay the test until the drugs are no longer detectable.

In contrast, hair sample testing offers a significantly extended window of detection. When analyzing head hair samples, the testing can identify drug use for a period of 90 days. Moreover, by utilizing body hair samples, this window can be extended up to an impressive 12 months. This prolonged detection capability makes hair sample testing a valuable tool in identifying drug use over an extended timeframe.

Sample Collection Process

The collection process for our hair drug testing service is designed to be quick, simple, and painless, as it solely requires hair samples from the client.

Upon ordering the test, a sample collection kit will be conveniently sent to the client’s address. The kit includes a hair specimen pouch, collection foil, a clear plastic transport bag, and easy-to-follow instructions.

To ensure accurate results, please adhere to the following guidelines during the sample collection:

A minimum of 90-120 strands of hair, equivalent to more than 60 milligrams, is required.
Hair should be taken from multiple areas around the head.
If the individual being tested has head hair shorter than ½ inch, please use body hair exclusively.
If body hair is utilized, make sure to indicate on the sample collection form that it is a body hair sample.
It is crucial not to mix head hair and body hair samples.

Once the laboratory receives the samples, results are typically available within 3 to 5 working days.

The Limitations of the Test

When collecting head hair samples for hair drug testing, it is recommended to wait for a period of 5 to 10 days after drug use. During this timeframe, the hair follicle containing traces of the drug grows above the scalp, making it more detectable.

While body hair is acceptable for hair drug testing, it may take longer for the drug to be incorporated into the hair follicle. Consequently, using body hair requires a longer detection window compared to head hair. The exact time frame cannot be specified as hair growth rates vary significantly.

It is important to note that hair color does not significantly impact the test results. This has been validated through experimental research and has been determined as admissible evidence in court proceedings.
